New fragment of Paul's letter to the Romans discovered this week!

CNN is reporting that a recently unknown fragment of Romans 9-10 has been discovered in the last few days. Steve Green is the president of Hobby Lobby stores in the USA and has collected more than 40,000 artifacts and manuscripts related to the Bible. He has been working on the collection with  Baylor University and is getting ready to put is display on the road.

In the below video, Green shows a papyrus fragment of Romans 9-10 that he says was only discovered in the last 48 hours among the acquisitions by Scott Caroll who oversees the collection for Green at Baylor. It will be interesting to see what other materials Green has managed to purchase and what they might helps us learn about the textual history of the Bible. If you are interested in the exhibition and Greens collection you can read more at explorepassages.com.

  1. Exciting! Maybe we will have another textual variant or two on our hands.... wait a minute... never mind! I take that back. I don't want to have to buy USB's 5th Edition. "Old faithful" (Edition 4) is serving me just fine.

  2. Hobby Lobby. Owned by a strict fundamentalist, I understand. I am skeptical.

    1. So, you dismiss the evidence because the kind of person who owns it might not fit your preferred profile? Maybe the fragment of Romans is authentic Second Century, maybe not. Let's see what it tells us, whether its owner is a "strict fundamentalist", or not.

  3. I was at a debate tonight at UNC Chapel Hill with Dr. Bart Ehrman and Dr. Dan Wallace. Dr. Wallace announced that the earliest manuscript is of Mark and has been dated to the 1st century by probably the best in the business (a non-Christian as well). He mentioned a manuscript of Luke that rivals the date for P52. He said there are 18 new discoveries in all. He stated that from what he has examined these texts did not change anything that we didn’t already know. He also said he wasn’t at liberty to say much more.

Thanks for letting me know. Apart from this short video clip there is little information out there.
